North Carolina Irrigation Contractors' Licensing Board Information
How to become licensed!!
According to the recently enacted licensure law, no person shall engage in the practice of irrigation construction or contracting, use the designation 'irrigation contractor,' or advertise using any title or description that implies licensure as an irrigation contractor unless the person is licensed as an irrigation contractor. All irrigation construction or contracting performed by an individual, partnership, association, corporation, firm, or other group shall be under the direct supervision of an individual licensed by the Board.
Grandfather provisions apply until June 29, 2009.

Any business entity, other than a sole proprietorship, must also complete the corporate license application.
**Note- South Carolina Irrigation Contractors doing work in North Carolina must be licensed by North Carolina**

Reasons to become Certified
If you offer professional irrigation services, the Irrigation Association and the NC Nursery & Landscape Association offers you the ability to attain the highest level in your specialty. Certification offers you a means to differentiate your services. It offers consumers - and employers - a basis for comparison. It elevates the industry and your ability to be compensated for professional services.
The Irrigation Association offers the following certifications:
- Certified Irrigation Contractor (CIC)
- Certified Irrigation Designer (CID)
- Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor (CLIA)
- Certified Golf Irrigation Auditor (CGIA)
- Certified Agricultural Irrigation Specialist (CAIS)
- Certified Water Conservation Manager - Landscape (CWCM-L)
NC Nursery & Landscape Association offers the Certified Landscape Technician Exam Irrigation Element
The CLT test is a combination of written and hands-on testing. All hands-on elements approximate “real life” scenarios which are supervised by one or more judges – see module requirements under “ABOUT THE TEST”. At the end of each timed session, the applicants rotate to another work station. Applicants must pass ALL elements to become a Certified Landscape Technician (CLT). Those who do not pass, may re-take the element(s) at any CLT test site – see PLANET’s website for all test dates.
